When is the last time you took a serious look at your roof? Most people are aware of the importance of proper roof maintenance, but it’s not always easy to know when to stop dumping money into minor repairs and spring for a new roof.
The National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) recommends that you do a thorough inspection of your roof at least twice a year.
Here are a few signs that it’s time for a roof replacement:
AN INSIDE LOOK
The best place to start your roof inspection is the interior. Make your way to the attic and check for the following:
- Leaks or water damage
- Dark spots
- Sagging areas
- Outside light showing through
CHECK IT OUTSIDE
Here are some telltale signs that your roof might be living out it’s final days:
Note: While it’s possible to spot the signs of advanced wear in a roof without proper training, navigating a rooftop for a thorough inspection can be dangerous, especially if you suspect that it may be damaged. It’s recommended that you employ the services of a certified roofer.
- Damaged flashing
- Missing shingles
- Loose material around chimneys, vents, or pipes
- Signs of excessive moisture mold or rot
- Shingle granules in the gutters
- Curling, blistering, or buckling
DON’T PANIC!
If you’ve noticed one or two of the previously mentioned problems on your roof, it doesn’t mean that you have to start immediately planning for a roof replacement. If your roof is less than 15 to 20 years old, there is a good possibility that it can be repaired. The best way to determine your next course of action is to discuss your situation with a certified roofing contractor.
